As a designer (theatre and film) these apps are a blessing. When I am on the go, on set or at the studios and need to do a quick calculation, I can now just pull out my iPhone 3G and run the App and I’m done. No more lugging a MacBook or PC around. This is a god-send for all designers both Tech Theatre and Film/TV!

Font Combinations” is our first app — you can learn different typefaces and create pairs to see how they relate visually. You can instantly see, for instance, why Garamond or Bembo goes with Helvetica as it’s body copy, but not something close to Helvetica, like Myriad. You don’t need a zillion fonts to create some very distinguished looks — you do need a good set of basic typefaces though. This app helps you work through that a little. If you like typography, you’ll get a kick out of being able to just switch up the fonts with a swipe.

We just released an iPhone CAD app. Its called SitePAD and lets the user create a simple 2D CAD drawing file — whilst out and about, and then export it to their desktop for further work. Definately worth a look!

  73. Darren Kutcheon

I’d add DesignRuler. It’s a tiny version of the clear plastic ruler you use to measure type sizes, leading, and line thickness. Seems to have been overlooked on a lot of these lists.
