Free tool: Symbol Signs collection

This is a collection of 50 common used signage symbols, professional designed. The symbols signs are free of charge available as an OpenType font format, allowing you to easily add symbols & icons to your sign and wayfinding design. All the symbols have been designed & created by Sander Baumann and set to the proportions of a regular typeface, so you no longer need to copy/paste the symbols into your designs.

Symbol Signs

symbol signs
In this free collection I have added common used symbol signs for public services such as Toilets, Telephone, First Aid, Elevator, Information, Restaurant, Coffee Shop, Smoking, Baby, Recycle Icon, Shower, Reception desk, Arrows collection and much, much more.

The symbol signs can be used for signage & wayfinding projects. The complete symbol collection is optimized for reproduction methods such as engraving, laser engraving/cutting, screen printing and self adhesive film to manufacture the signs you need.

Toilet symbol signs

symbol sign male female
The symbol signs have been designed for good readability and functionality, when installing the typeface into your computer the typeface symbol signs is added to your system, I have set the icons to match the most common letters for the symbols, for example F = female, M = male, d = disabled, L = arrow left, R = arrow right, U = arrow up, D = arrow down, and so on. This allows you to quickly add the symbol sign you need.

Example symbol signs with text in grid design

example grid design sybmol signs
This is a sample grid design using Museo Sans 500 by Jos Buivenga and the symbol signs collection, both work really well for signage purposes. Next articles will include a free complete design template for hotel signage and wayfinding, examples of signs and articles on how to create signs using a grid based design and Indesign. Hi namesake (see my last name),
thank you for the symbols — and your blog in general. I really appreciate it!
Free symbols you also get at AIGA’s website. Check for the symbol collection at Aiga
These are very classic ones but still inspiring. At least they are a good starting basis for a own set of symbols.

CALLING ALL SIGN SPOTTERS……
My name is Trevor Ward. I am developing a TV documentary idea about “the science of signs” and would like to hear from anyone who has a professional or personal interest in this subject WHO IS BASED IN THE UK. I have already been in direct contact with several people on this blog, including Sander(thanks for your help so far), and would like to speak to anyone else who has a passion for the art of signs and information design. We would like to speak to them about every aspect of signs - from the design to the psychology behind them - and why they think they are so cool, their favourite examples, etc. etc.
The documentary is in its very early stages yet, but if you are interested in being involved, or would like more information, please contact me at:
trev.ward@kowalskimedia.co.uk
Thanks for your time(and your space Sander!)

Sander,

What exactly do you mean by “professionally designed”? Are you sure these were all designed by professionals? Should you credit the original designers?

How does one qualify to be a professional symbol designer?

How can you know if these are also professionally tested?
Are you aware of the internationally recommended standard for testing symbols?
ISO 9186-2:2008 http://www.iso.org/iso/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=43484

If they haven’t been tested, you are not legally covered and if someone gets hurt in an environment where these symbols are used, they could claim they didn’t understand the sign and you would have no defence.

Hi John Finder - thank you for taking the time to write a comment about my symbol signs collection. These symbols are from my personal designed collection which I am using in my signage & wayfinding projects in the Netherlands, all of the symbols are designed by myself.

Thank you for the mention of the ISO 9186-2 Standard for Graphic symbols, testing methods. At this time not every symbol in this collection will comply to the suggested ISO Standard, but maby in the future I will modify and / or add symbols to this collection that it will comply to the ISO Standard. As result of your comment I have added the following term for downloading and using my free symbol collection in your own designs.

You expressly agree that any use of the symbol signs collections is entirely at your own risk

If you are looking for ISO Standard Symbol Signs, please visit the website Ultimate Symbol* and search for ISO Signs & Icons. *These sets are not free.

Hopefully this will answer your questions.

Hey Sander,

I like the detail on the female pictogram and the baby bottle.

I do see where John Finder is coming from… There is an advantage to using standardised international symbols – because they are commonly used, they are also commonly recognised, which reduces interpretation time and cognitive-load during wayfinding.

That said, the AIGA set of symbols includes pictograms that are graphically more consistent, compared with ISO7001 (Public Information Symbols) and we have opted to using them, making clients aware of the differences, pros and cons.

Maybe John Finder is concerned about ambiguity in the interpretation of some symbols. If that’s the case, a level of redundancy can be added by accompanying the pictogram with text. Some accessibility consultants would support this approach while others would say it’s cluttering the sign and adds to the cognitive-load.

Every view is debateable and design decisions can be rationalised, but face it, at the end of the day, as designers we just see things with a different eye. Testing is important to ensure what we design works as intended for the target audience.

very nice symbols Sander! i particularly like the subtle addition of a curved line on the dress of the female toilet symbol!

if anyone wants a load more symbols they could try taking a look at http://www.dafont.com and check the dingbats - various - category for a load of different symbols, some are well designed and others not so good but the way i see it the more ideas that are out there the more chance we have of coming up with new and innovative symbols.

thanks for the symbols Sander :)
