Typography for your iPhone & iPod touch

There are various tools for showing fonts on the iPhone/iPod and recently a font experience came to the appstore from the creator of iLoveTypography, John Boardley. This post will feature some of the typography app available.

The Font Game

The Font GameThe Font Game has the combination between recognition, fun and learning. The app has over 600 font samples from various font foundries like Hoefler & Frere-Jones, FontShop, exljbris and many many more.

The game is intriguing because of the 3 level difficulty and the time. While playing I noticed myself looking at the clock and this increased the game fun even more. Can you tell the difference between Arial and Helvetica or can you spot Gerard Ungers Swift? The great thing about this game is I noticed a complete range of fonts that I didn’t know before. At the end of each game you will see an overview of the fonts which you got right or wrong, mayby a suggestion to create a link or additional information about the fonts.

The app the beautifully designed with a great UX interface and I believe this is one of the first in its kind and please try this addictive game for yourself! Available at the app store for $.99

  • 600 font samples
  • Rotate to view full screen
  • 3 levels of game play
  • Post scores to Twitter and The Hall of Fame
  • View your answers after each game
  • Battle against the clock

FontShop FontShuffle

Font ShuffleFontshuffle is a complete library of typefaces from the FontShop foundry. It features many of the typefaces available.

FontShuffle is not a game but a reference guide when searching for a typeface in need. At the start-screen you can choose what kind of type you are looking for such as sans, sans-serif, slab-serif and so on. From each selection you make a new selection screen comes up with more detailed questions on what you are looking for. After a few clicks you are presented with typefaces and when you rotate your iPhone/iPod the fonts will shuffle. After making a selection you are able to send the details of the chosen typeface by email. Free available at the app store.

  • Over 650 font families
  • Compare 24 typefaces
  • Shuffle
  • Send details by email

Other font apps available at the app store

Earlier this year I have reviewed the app WhatTheFont, an app for identifying typefaces from a photo.

At the app store many more applications are available, below you will find a few to keep you busy.

  • The Typography Manual by Justin Stahl, a pocket resource for graphic designers and anyone that works with type. It provides the essential typography information on your iPhone/iPod. Available for €2,99, more information at The Typography Manual.
  • Font Size - is a free application for people who work with fonts every day. It provides a size calculator for making statistically-informed font-size decisions. Enter the viewing distance and the Font Size calculator computes the minimum font size. Nice! More information about the Font Size at Paul Chang.
  • TypePhoto - a nice app to visualization of your creative imagination. Select an image and create stunning looking typographical images, for more information see here at TypePhoto.

Typography: Citroën rebrand with custom corporate typeface

Recently car manufacturer Citroën introduced a major rebrand, designed by Landor. The rebranding program included a complete redesign of Citroën’s showrooms and all visual communications. The advertisements campaigns are already changed in the Netherlands. What I noticed was the usage of a custom typeface instead of the typeface Futura/Gill Sans, as used before. The new custom typeface is mainly used in uppercase. I have searched about the origin of this typeface but nothing came up, so far.

Below you will find various photos taken with clear usage of the new typeface. I very much like how this typeface works, it has a very sleek and modern look. Especially the thin font variant works really well. It attracted my attention immediately.

Citroen typeface

Citroen typeface

Citroen typeface

The main reason the typeface is very eligible because of its square glyphs, almost every single glyphs has the same dimensions, which makes it really readable from a distance.

From a online PDF file I have learned that this custom typeface has three font variants and are named:

  • Citroen
  • Citroen-Bold
  • Citroen-Light

From the press release:

Graphic principles for visibility and consistency
CITROËN is introducing new graphic designs, a single typography and a unique tone of voice to boost the visibility and consistency of the brand. The new brand will universally reflect the Marque’s new status. The key colours are white, denoting openness and elegance, and red, to express vitality, together with black, grey and chrome, for status and power.

I have not seen many examples using the lowercase font variant of this custom typeface, so I searched internet and found this new folder using the typeface in uppercase and lowercase.

Typeface Citroen: Uppercase

In my opinion the uppercase only text is much stronger than the lowercase variant, but it has a strong distinctive look which seems to be bases on a combination between Futura & Gill Sans. If any one knows who designed the custom typeface please let me know.

Citroën Logo

Citroen logo
Since its introduction there has been many discussions about the logo, personally I prefer the new logo above the old one because of its transparency look & feel.

Citroën’s new logo will help reignite interest in the iconic brand.

Font Series: Arial is everywhere

Arial, a contemporary sans serif typeface by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders designed for Monotype in 1982. If you are familair with a computer you must know Arial, one the most used “standard” typefaces for “normal” computer usage. Most professional designers and typophiles think of Arial as a copied typeface from Helvetica and while reading the The Scourge of Arial by Mark Simonson Studio I have realized this is in fact a true story.

The typeface became free with the release of Windows 3.1, which was a sales hit and Arial quickly gained spread around the globe. The main reason why Microsoft chose Arial as standard typeface is because of the licence fee from the original Helvectia typeface by the Haas Foundry was too high. Missed change to educate the world about the wonderful Grostek family.

Arial vs Helvetica

180px-arial_helvetica_overlay2svg
There are several glyps of the typefaces similar and some of them are different. Due the similiarity Arial is often (unfortunally) mistaken for Helvetica, the differences between these two typefaces is explained in an article on iLT, both typefaces are shown next to each other making it easier to recognize.

Today Arial belongs to Linotype as Monotype Original:

Arial is an extremely versatile family of typefaces which can be used with equal success for text setting in reports, presentations, magazines etc, and for display use in newspapers, advertising and promotions.

Review: WhatTheFont for iPhone

WhatTheFont, a great tool to check a font from an bitmap image. For years the tools is to be found online at myfonts. I have used this tool many times before and was wondering if it will become available for iPhone. From January 2009 this tool is released for iPhone users and now you can take a photo and identify the font using this new iPhone App.

WhatTheFont iPhone App

img_0006This is a review of WhatTheFont for iPhone App, I will go into every step of identifying a font using this App & a iPhone. I will try to get the results as stated from the myFonts website: Identify the fonts in a photo or web graphic! .

Ever seen a great font in a magazine ad, poster, or on the web and wondered what font it is? Whip out your iPhone and snap a photo, and WhatTheFont for iPhone will identify that font in seconds!

WhatTheFont iPhone App is free available from the iPhone store created by myFonts.

  • install WhatTheFont iPhone App

Let’s get started!

img_0010Downloaded the tool into my iPhone and started the program, as you can see in the splash screen there are two options. One is to take a new photo or you can select a photo from your photo-roll in your iPhone. I selected the first option and took a new photo of the Apple Airport box. When taking a photo use the following tips from myFonts:

  • WhatTheFont works best with just a few, large letters. Keep the text to fewer than 20 characters.
  • Try to get the text as close to horizontal as possible. (Pretty hard to manage with an iPhone)
  • Avoid connected letters (as in logo’s or cursive handwriting)
  • A well-lit, uniform-color background works the best

With this Airport example I adapted the above steps and started working with the photo and selected use photo. Now I am able to use my fingers onto the photo to draw a box around the text. At first it seems pretty hard to get a good box around the text, but after some experience it worked better and betters. You can also rotate the photo by rotating your iPhone, I found this not very helpful and I would suggest to take the photo in a standing up position. When you have selected the desired text to identify hit the right top corner Upload. The App is uploading the cropped image to myFonts to identify the font.

Check Characters

img_0011
In this step of identifying a font you can see the results of WhatTheFonts character guessing. The App shows you every single letter of the selected text and you are able to remove characters from identifying by selecting the red icon left from the letter.

Some characters such as the letters i WhatTheFont separates the stroke from the dot. You can merge these two images for betters results in identifying the font. This needs some practice, try selecting two images with two fingers, the boxes turn grey and you are able to move them towards each other, the tool then merges the letters and you only need to fill in the correct letter in the right box. Hit the box and the type-in screen appears.

When you are done modifying and inserting missing characters hit Identify! and the right top corner. The App communicates with myFonts and presents you with the results.

Font Identified!

img_0012
The font is recognized! In this case the font Myriad-Pro Semibold is found as to match, further on various other close fonts are mentioned for you to pick the perfect match with the taken photo. I have run this example a few times, 3 times out of 4 it gave this results, not bad in my opinion.

When selecting the identified font you are presented with two options: One send an email containing a link to the myFonts website or you can open the link on your iPhone with Safari browser. The most powerful option (for me) is sending a link by email, this way I can check the typeface

Visiting the myFonts website allows you to buy and see all the font details.

My findings

I simply love this tool for my iPhone, it gives me freedom to take shots where ever I am and quickly find out which font it is. A few details that I don’t like about this tool:

  • When first installed the App crashed many times, I needed to clear the iPhone memory by a hardware restart in order to make this tool work better.
  • Taking a horizontal shot of text is not very easy and the letters on the photos are quickly a bit blur, so WhatTheFont cannot recognize the font. I know this is partly due the low quality camera in the iPhone.
  • Indoor shots are not always recognized correctly due the low contrast background.

My Suggestions for WhatTheFont iPhone App

WhatTheFont for iPhone is currently in version 1.0, I have some suggestions to improve this tool and make it even more useful:

  • In the crop image selection should be these two options: a contrast slider to get a better separation between text and background and the option to sharpen the image. I believe with these two options you will have better results in identifying the fonts. Even better would be a function to apply an auto adjustment to the cropped text (like in Fireworks/Photoshop). I used the iPhone App Photonasis Lite to enhance photos for better recognition.
  • Add more separation in boxes at the Check Chars step, when trying to delete characters I kept hitting the wrong box and got the typescreen.
  • Use a timestamp and Google maps location when sending a link by email, this way I will know when and where I was when I saw that particular font.
  • When a font is not recognized use a option to send the image to the WhatTheFont forum to find out if anybody else could help me finding out what font it is.

Requirements and information

  • For iPhone and iPod Touch with the latest firmware update. With the iPhone you can take photos and use them in the tool, for iPod Touch users you can only use the photos from the photoroll (no camera).
  • Wifi connection or mobile network to upload the photos and see the results.
  • Fonts, fonts and more fonts!
  • Visit the website myFonts to read more about this great iPhone App WhatTheFont
  • Download and install WhatTheFont on your iPhone.

Conclusion

I like the WhatTheFont iPhone App a lot, it might needs some more approvements but my iPhone is turning into a complete design studio at the moment! Love it! The succes rate for identifying fonts is (with good photos) I guess somewhere around 75%.

Go try this tool, I am looking forward to your findings in the comments!
Thank you in advance.

Dutch government introduces corporate typeface

As part of the new brand identity of the Dutch government Peter Verheul designed a custom typeface for all forms of visual communications.

Currently there are over 200 departments and ministries which all have different logos and uses different typefaces as their brand identity. In a pitch held by the Dutch government studio Dumbar won this competition and introduced a new logo and 1 brand identity: 1 Logo.

Typeface: Rijksoverheid Sans / Serif

Dutch government typeface Rijksoverheid Sans Serif
From the beginning of 2008 Peter Verheul was asked by studio Dumbar to take his typeface Versa and transform the typeface usable for a larger audience. He changed the look and feel of the Serif version of Versa Serif and created a complete new set of letters for the Sans version. The fonts are named Rijksoverheid Sans and Rijksoverheid Serif. The name of the typeface is recognizable as “government” and will be used in every way of visual communication. The Rijksoverheid Sans will be used mainly for headings of text and in signage or wayfinding systems. The Rijksoverheid Serif is used as bread letter for reading text. In just under nine months Peter Verheul managed to finalize the fonts and released them in four different variations, from Regular, Italic to Bold.

Designing the Rijksoverheid typeface

First notebook sketches by Peter Verheul, designing the bracket of Rijksoverheid Serif.

Design of typeface Rijksoverheid Sans Serif

Print preview of the typeface as workhorse.

Print samples of Rijksoverheid Sans Serif
During the time of creation Peter Verheul did not have much time to take pictures (as said in his introduction speech) but he kept a note book full of drawings and notes of creating and designing the typefaces. After finishing the typefaces he donated them to Bijzondere Collecties, a Dutch important collection of valuable work from Dutch graphical, typographical- artists. The Bijzondere Collections hosts the booklet, first printouts and everything that is related in creating the typeface Rijksoverheid.

Letterijk book

Letterijk the creation of Rijksoverheid Sans Serif
Letterrijk Book is a story about the birth and why of creation the typeface Rijksoverheid written by Mathieu Lommen, published by De Buitenkant Publishers. The booklet covers everything from the start of the project and the combination with project 1 Logo, a story about how the typography started working together, with many drawn examples of early stages of letter design. It also covers the complete glyphs of the typeface variations, with over 700 glyphs each this typeface is multi-language proof. With the design of the typeface several key factors of demands where given to Peter Verheul and Studio Dumbar. The typeface should be easy to read, should not be too wide in order to reduce printing costs, it could be used for all forms of visual communication of the Dutch Government and every department will use it therefore it will reduce the costs of different typeface licenses. The typeface will function as a bridge between society and government, a typeface that everybody will feel comfortable with.

RijksoverheidSans

Rijksoverheid Sans
In this example above you can cleary see the use of Rijksoverheid Sans, an easy to read typeface with a large x-height. This allows maximum legibility for heading text, signage, wayfinding and other forms of visual identity. In the introduction speech Peter Verheul mentioned that he was impressed by the way the Sans version would be used for bread letter. He is interested to see the further development of Rijksoverheid Sans in this field.

RijksoverheidSerif

Rijksoverheid Serif
In the example above the Rijksoverheid Serif is the bread letter for reading text, I have read the booklet a couple of times and it seems to be a very legible typeface. Which will form the basis of the whole brand identity of the Dutch Government.

Project: 1 Logo

Project Logo 1 Rijksoverheid
The Dutch government brand identity was not concise or consistent, with over 200 departments and ministries costs were rising of each department havigd their own logo, typeface, print materials, signage and everything that involves the visual communication of that department. There was not a direct link to society and confusion about the identity the government wants to presents themselves. Project 1 Logo was born to bring back all brand identity of the Dutch government and give one signal to society about what the government stands for. In a pitch several design studios participated in order to create 1 Logo, 1 brand, 1 identity, 1 way of communicating between society and government, coming all together as 1 government. From 2009 until 2011 every department should use the new logo and typeface in all forms of visual communication, a huge operation which involves many parties. I believe there will be a brand guideline from studio Dumbar to lead everything into the correct, concise and consistent use of the brand identity.

1 Logo Signage

Project Logo 1 Signage
We have been pleased to work on a mock-up signage nameplate for 1 logo project, the Rijksoverheid logo was engraved into an stainless steel nameplate.

Rijksoverheid Sans / Serif

At the moment only the parties involved in the brand identity process have access to Rijksoverheid typefaces, as the project 1 Logo evolves more designers will come across the typefaces and will give new direction to the look and feel of the Dutch Government.
