Recently I came accross various websites filled with quotes from designers & artists from around the world, insiprational quotes to get you thinking. In this article I have selected various top design quotes that apply to my experience and gives me power to be creative and think foward. I have also asked several fellow bloggers about their favourite design(ers) quotes and the feedback was a very positive and the inspiring list of quotes are embedded in this article. Please join in and add your favourite design(ers) quote in the comments, thank you very much!

Designers Quotes

Design Quotes

Architecture design quotes

  • Organic architecture seeks superior sense of use and a finer sense of comfort, expressed in organic simplicity. Frank Lloyd Wright
  • I’ve always believed that architecture is more important than decoration. Scale and proportion give everlasting satisfaction that cannot be achieved by only icing the cake. Billy Baldwin

Design Philosophy

  • Design is in everything we make, but it’s also between those things. It’s a mix of craft, science, storytelling, propaganda, and philosophy. Erik Adigard
  • Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose. Charles Eames
  • Design’s fundamental role is problem solver. Fast Company, 2005
  • Good design, at least part of the time, includes the criterion of being direct in relation to the problem at hand — not obscure, trendy, or stylish. A new language, visual or verbal, must be couched in a language that is already understood. Ivan Chermayeff
  • Good design is the most important way to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. Samsung CEO Yun Jong Yong, 2004
  • Graphics is the visual means of resolving logical problems. Bertin
  • A design isn’t finished until somebody is using it. Brenda Laurel
  • Intelligent design itself does not have any content. George Gilder

Branding

  • Brand value is very much like an onion. It has layers and a core. The core is the user who will stick with you until the very end. Edwin Artzt
  • Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works. Steve Jobs, 2003
  • A logo is not a brand. The BrandGap
  • You are what you are seen to be. Erik Spiekermann
  • [logos are a] graphic extension of the internal realities of a company. Saul Bass
  • Accessible design is good design. Steve Ballmer

Business

  • If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur. Red Adair
  • Sometimes there is simply no need to be either clever or original. Ivan Chermayeff
  • Invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. Thomas Edison
  • I don’t design clothes, I design dreams. Ralph Lauren

Typography

Design Quotes

  • Typography at its best is a visual form of language linking timelessness and time. Robert Bringhurst
  • Most people think typography is about fonts. Most designers think typography is about fonts. Typography is more than that, it’s expressing language through type. Placement, composition, typechoice. Mark Boulton
  • Writing is not a series of strokes, but space, divided into characteristic shapes by strokes. Gerrit Noordzij, 1931
  • From all these experiences the most important thing I have learned is that legibility and beauty stand close together and that type design, in its restraint, should be only felt but not perceived by the reader. Adrian Frutiger
  • Faces of type are like men’s faces. They have their own expression; their complexion and peculiar twists and turns of line identify them immediately to friends, to whom each is full of identity. J.L. Frazier
  • Great typophile thread with many more typographical quotes.

Favourite designers quotes from fellow bloggers

I have contact various authors from design blogs and asked them their favourite designers quote, this came out as a very positive and inspiring design quotes. Thank you for participating!

Jin Y from design & inspiration blog 8164.org send in the following quote:

  • Form follows function-that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union. Frank Lloyd
  • Comment by Jin Y: I’ve been a long time admirer of Mr. Wright’s work. His designs are elegant, simplistic and comfortable. As a web designer, I often see the correlations between good architecture design and good web design. Both have the elements of form and function. I often hear people talk about form and function as if they were mutually exclusive, or one precedes the other.

Dmitry Fadeev from Usabilitypost send me the following quotes:

  • The two most important tools an architect has are the eraser in the drawing room and the sledge hammer on the construction site.” Frank Lloyd Wright
  • To design something really well you have to get it. You have to really grok what it’s all about. It takes a passionate commitment to thoroughly understand something — chew it up, not just quickly swallow it .. .. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. They don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions, without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better designs we will have. Steve Jobs, Wired (March, 1996)

  • David Airey from LogoDesignLove and David Airey send in the following quote:

  • The real issue is not talent as an independent element, but talent in relationship to will, desire, and persistence. Talent without these things vanishes and even modest talent with those characteristics grows. Milton Glaser

  • Dan Reynolds from TypeOff send in the following quotes:

  • Schrift ist nicht alles, denn Schrift ohne Anwendung ist wie eine Blume ohne Duft, ist wie eine ungekorkte Flasche und ein ungeküßtes Mädchen.” This could probably be translated as, “type is not everything, because type without an application is like a flower without aroma, an uncorked bottle and a girl who has never been kissed.” Günter Gerhard Lange (1996)
  • To be blunt, and it is good advice to serious newcomers: do not make the mistake of being afraid to be labelled ‘conventional’, ‘traditional’, or any other such dusty term.” Fred Smeijers, from Type Now: A Manifesto (2004)

  • LaurenMarie from CreativeCurio send in the following quotes:

  • Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions; there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated. Paul Rand
  • I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it. Pablo Picasso
  • Don’t worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you’ll have to ram them down people’s throats. Howard Aiken (not a designer, but rather the main guy behind IBM’s Harvard Mark I computer. Still, this could apply to design!)

  • Leon Paternoster, a teacher, designer and blogger send in the following quotes:

  • Good design, at least part of the time, includes the criterion of being direct in relation to the problem at hand — not obscure, trendy, or stylish. A new language, visual or verbal, must be couched in a language that is already understood. Ivan Chermayeff
  • Colour does not add a pleasant quality to design — it reinforces it. Pierre Bonnard
  • Communicative grammar is generally defined by contrast, balance, harmony, and distribution. Andy Rutledge
  • The design process is essentially a process of subtraction, organisation and emphasis. Leon Paternoster
  • Simplifying design equates to reducing the choices available to the user to a few core, meaningful options. Leon Paternoster

  • Adelle Charles from Fuel Your Creativity send in the following quote:

  • Good designers can create normalcy out of chaos; they can clearly communicate ideas through the organizing and manipulating of words and pictures.” Jeffery Veen

  • Erik Brandt designer & teacher at Minneapolis College of Art and Design and blogger send in the following quote:

  • For after all, a poster does more than simply supply information on the goods it advertises; it also reveals a society’s state of mind.” No posters, no culture? Armin Hoffman
  • Among the few I have indicated, is there no dynamic man of action, the rebel who will help determine the aspect of the collective expression of tomorrow? Ponder this question and know that to make beautiful creations for the sake of their aesthetic value will have no social significance tomorrow, will be non-sensical self-gratification. Every era contains the conditions for providing a rebel.” Piet Zwart

  • Thank you all very much for sending in the quotes, highly appreciated! As DWP reader I would suggest checking out the websites of the fellow bloggers. Thanks again.

    Nice post, Sander.

Interesting to see that Ivan Chermayeff pops up a couple of times—he’s not someone I’d come across before you asked for the quotes, but I’m liking the cut of his jib.

Of course, I don’t normally quote myself in such exalted company ;)

  5. David Airey

A great idea, Sander. Thanks for asking me to take part.

I particularly like this quote from Erik Spiekermann:

You are what you are seen to be.”

  6. David Airey

    Leon,

Ivan Chermayeff’s jib has an excellent cut. I agree.

  7. Mokokoma Mokhonoana

A very good collection of excellent quotes that not only inspires but (some) teaches!

  8. Todd Reynolds

The life of a designer is a life of fight–fight against the ugliness, just like a doctor fights against disease. For us, visual disease is what we have all around, and what we try to do is to cure it somehow with Design.“
    –Massimo Vignelli

Hi Jin — Thanks for your comment and sending in your favourite designers quotes! Appreciated.

Thanks Leon Paternoster — for your comment and sending in your quotes! I cannot seem to place “cut of his jib”, English is not my native language, but thanks anyway because David gets it aswel! Thanks again.

Thank you David Airey — for sending in your favourite design quote and comment in this post! Appreciated. I have enjoyed gathering all the quotes and information for this post. I was searching for more quotes from Erik Spiekermann but this one is great. Thanks again for participating.

Hi Mokokoma Mokhonoana — and welcome here at DWP, thank you for your comment! Whats your favourite designers quote?

Thanks Todd Reynolds — for sending in your quote. Agreed with your quote, by design we can create a visual nicer world! At Vignelli website are some more inspriring quotes, thanks for sharing.

Thanks MP — for your comment! Picasso maby old but he knew what he was talking about ;-)

  12. Nate

Thanks Sander for the curating of thoughts on design. Keep up the good work!

  13. Nate

Lots of thoughts of design to highlight but here are two that were recently discovered:

Design is always a tortuous, grueling, almost maddening, though heavenly sweet, task.”
    —Joel Haertling, Architect

    Contrasted by:

Design is a journey, not a task.”
    —Will McClellan, Interactive Designer

  14. John

A quote I’ve tried to live by that I came up with a long time ago: “Sight is not what is seen, but what is dreamed.”

  15. inspirationbit

    Very inspiring collection, Sander.

My all time favourite quote is one by Antoine de Saint-Exupery:
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

It can be applied to anything we create, design including.

  16. Tony Oravet

Great collection of quotes. I can relate to most of them! I especially like this one:

A design isn’t finished until somebody is using it.” Brenda Laurel

I think Brenda might have been pointing to the fact that without content for the design, you can’t publish it.…so hey give us the content!!!!

  17. Mokokoma Mokhonoana

Sander: Thanks for the warm welcome! instead of sharing one quote I’d like to share a collection I made of quotes that educates clients on the value of design.

Quotes can be viewed at: http://is.gd/aTnr

  18. Sander Baumann

Hi Nate — thanks for your input, I enjoyed reading your quotes and also believe that design is not a task but a feeling!

Beautiful John — quote! I believe when you life by your quote doors will open for you that have been closed before applying your quote. Thanks for sharing.

Great quote Vivien (inspirationbit) — Thanks for sharing. Your quote reminds me of More is less, which always has a greater impact than you could have imagined.

Welcome Tony Oravet — to DWP, thanks for sharing your quote. That quote is so true, thanks for bringing it to the attention.

Mokokoma Mokhonoana — heads up for your post. Thanks for sharing.

  19. Leon Paternoster

I like the cut of his jib

means that I like the look of him, the sort of person he seems to be, the things he says etc. I’m not sure where the idiom comes from.

And your English is excellent. Running a bi-lingual site is pretty good going.

  20. blpgirl

Very nice collection! I specially love the one of Picasso.

Here are one of my favourites:

In art the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can inspire.“
    Ralph Waldo Emerson

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Design is knowing which ones to keep“
    Scott Adams

Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context — a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan.”
    Eliel Saarinen

  21. Tracey Grady

This is a marvellous post. I am a big collector of quotes relating to creativity, and there are many here which are very inspiring. Here are a couple that I really like, although neither comes from a designer:

An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.“
    Charles Bukowski

Perfectionism is the enemy of creation.“
    John Updike

I have that last one pinned up next to my computer, but I still don’t look at it often enough.

  22. Josef Go-Oco

    Bringhurst’s aphorism: ‘typography honours content’.

  23. Sander Baumann

Thanks Leon Paternoster for explaining, appreciated!

Hi blpgirl — thanks very much for your comment and welcome here at DWP. I like your quotes, especially the one from Eliel Saarinen, thanks again for your favourite quotes.

Great quotes Tracey Grady, I like the way you have set your mind by pinning the quote onto your computer, but the reality fact is always when its there so close you don’t see it. Thanks again for sharing your favourite designers quotes.

You are right Josef Go-Oco — without typefaces there would be no communication what so ever! Thanks for sharing, appreciated.

  24. Josef Go-Oco

Don’t forget, it’s also not just about typefaces, but typography in itself as a whole.

“because I am critical does not mean I am correct.” ~Rob Roy Kelly

as designers, we seem to always have an opinion on the work and ideas of others … but that is all it is, an opinion — sometimes the suggestion works, sometimes it doesn’t, but it is our duty to raise questions and offer solutions or new viewpoints.

Excellent post. I think many people could learn from these quotes and use them in every day life. It is inspiring in many ways, not just design and writing but for every aspect of things we do. Has anyone else got any more quotes?

  40. M Peterson

The American painter Wayne Thiebaud said this when speaking about art but it applies equally well to design.

  41. German Amuchastegui

    James Victore

  46. Jo Hinchliffe

Thanks all for the inspiring quotations!
I seem to remember one, which I have a feeling may be by John Ruskin, but could be wrong — I think it is something like “Own only what is beautiful or serves a purpose.…” Can anyone help identify the quote and who said it?? Yours gratefully!

  47. M Peterson

The American painter Robert Gwathmey said

Beauty never comes from decorative effects, but from structural coherence.”

  48. hermes kelly bag

some really great quotes. I especially like Red Nadir’s.

  49. Designarcade

For a beginner web designer these quotes are very interesting. They will be more interested with their profession.

  50. Frinley Paul

Enjoyed this very much, some great inspirational quotes. Thanks for posting such wonderful wordings.

  51. Elizabeth Bosque

Love the list of quotes, very inspirational!

A question for those reading though, does anyone know who said this quote,

“i believe in design, good design. design that makes you happy. design thst pushes things forward. design that is simple, modern, and eye catching. Design that sells. I belive in my design.”

I came across it the other day and have been searching and can’t seem to find it. Thanks in advance :)

  52. Lomas

  53. Anti Social

I run this quote website myself. I try to write quotes about social media. and its negative sides. Worth checking out. Not as good as the design quotes maybe. but worth a visit.

  54. Theo Jarquin

Love these quotes as I have my self a website with quotes about life. Thought it would be wise to share my favorite quote: “It’s the choices that make us who we are, and we can always choose to do what’s right.” — Peter Parker
